Only workspace admins and owners are able to invite someone to their workspace. Workspace members may send a request to their workspace admin to invite someone.
If you are looking to invite someone external to Dartmouth, they will need to be invited as a guest. Skip ahead to the instructions for that below.
Member
Anyone with an @dartmouth.edu email address should be invited as a member. Faculty, Staff, Students, and Sponsored accounts are all licensed for Slack.
- Click on the workspace name at the top-left of Slack.
- Select "Invite people to <Your Workspace>".
- Enter the user’s full Dartmouth email address.
- Make sure to use their full Dartmouth email address that ends in @Dartmouth.edu, not @tuck.dartmouth.edu or other. Do not use an alias.
- You can find someone’s full email address at lookup.dartmouth.edu
- Click Send to send the user an invite.
Guest
If you are inviting multiple guests, and they are already using Slack at their organization, try Slack Connect. This creates a shared channel between your workspace and theirs so that multiple users can collaborate without needing guest accounts.
To send a single user a guest invite, follow these steps:
- Click on the workspace name at the top-left of Slack.
- Select "Invite people to <Your Workspace>".
- Click the dropdown menu under “Invite as” and select Guest.
- Enter the user’s non-Dartmouth email address.
- Type in the field to search for channels that the guest should be able to access in your workspace. You can add more than one.
- If the guest’s collaboration ends after a certain amount of time, you can set an expiration date on their guest account. You will receive a reminder before it expires and can extend it if needed.
- Finally, you can add a custom message to your invite if you like
- Click Send.
The invited guest will receive an email invite and can create a password for their guest account. When they sign in to the workspace, they can click on the “I have a guest account” button to sign in.
