Faculty iPads - Getting setup and recording

iOS apps

You must have an Apple ID and use the App Store on your Apple device to download and install iOS apps.

  • Zoom
  • GlobalProtect VPN
  • Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader
  • Cloud storage option (i.e. OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox)
  • Some sort of notebook app - GoodNotes, OneNote, Notability, etc.
  • Canvas Teacher
  • Make the native iOS Screen Recording app show in iPad control center. 

iOS Set-up (do once)

  • Make sure the iOS is up to date and on the latest version.
  • If you have the apps above already on your iPad, check for any updates
  • Go to Settings > Camera > Format and change the setting to Most Compatible (by default it is at High Efficiency)
  • Change the resolution of recording under Settings > Camera > Record Video to 1080p HD at 30 fps

Get productivity apps and install

These work off your Dartmouth NetID/password and require log in to activate.

O365 Users:

  • Microsoft PowerPoint (present & hand-write on slides)
  • Microsoft OneDrive (to transfer files from laptop to iPad)

Google Users:

  • Google Drive (to transfer files from laptop to iPad)
  • Google Slides (present only, no writing capability)

Dropbox Users:

  • Dropbox (to transfer files from laptop to iPad)

Recording setup:

  • Go to Settings  > Control Center > Customize Controls, then tap  next to Screen Recording.

Writing/Presentation:

  • (Optional) Other noteworthy writing/flexible presentation apps:
    • OneNote
    • Goodnotes
    • Notability

Screen Recording

  • Make the native iOS Screen Recording app show in iPad control center. 
  • Go to Settings  > Control Center > Customize Controls, then tap  next to Screen Recording.
  • Go to Settings > Camera > Format and change the setting to Most Compatible (by default it is at High Efficiency). If you do not change this, you might encounter laggy audio in the recording.
  • Check your recording settings, each time, so you know the Microphone is on.
    • Open Control Center (swipe down from right corner of screen), long tap (tap and hold a second)  and check that the "Microphone On" shows (turns red). If it shows as off (grayed out), tap to turn on. The "Photos" option on where to save the file should be checked. Tap again, somewhere on the screen and off the settings screen.
