Setting Up Your New Gmail Account

Note: Gmail is currently being rolled out to Students only, starting with Class of 2023.

We heard you, and it's finally here...welcome to Gmail at Dartmouth! These instructions walk you through forwarding email messages from your Office 365 mailbox (Microsoft Outlook) to your Dartmouth Gmail account.

You can opt-in to start using Gmail anytime. ITC has already given you access to an empty mailbox, but no email can get into your Dartmouth Gmail account until you set up forwarding in your Office 365 account.

Steps for self-service to opt-in to mail forwarding from Office 365

Your new Gmail mailbox at Dartmouth is a fresh start. You'll still be able to access your Office 365 mailbox to manage any previous mail, but can forward any new mail from your Office 365 account to Gmail the moment you set up your Gmail mailbox. Take a look at the diagram below for a visual representation of that process.

Now that you have an idea on how things work, let's set up forwarding to your Gmail mailbox from Office 365.

1. Log into https://dartdm.dartmouth.edu/.

2. Click "Email Delivery Options."

3. Check "Enable Forwarding", enter "netid@gsuite.dartmouth.edu", and click "Update Delivery Address."

Logging into Gmail

A direct link to log into Dartmouth's Gmail is: https://gmail.dartmouth.edu/. There are several other ways to open your mailbox, such as:

  • From another GSuite app, use the waffle icon in the top right.

  • From https://www.gmail.com/ log in. If you're already logged in with another account, you can change to your Dartmouth account with the pull down in the top right.

Important Notes

  • You can optionally use Google Calendar if you wish, but you will need to continue to use Office 365 for calendaring with other Dartmouth faculty and staff. See Using Gmail for Email and Office 365 for Calendar for instructions on doing calendaring.
  • If you decide to move back to Office 365, you will need to manually move any content back that you wish to preserve.
  • Best practice for accessing Gmail: Google highlights important security information regarding messages you've received in the native Gmail interface (via your web browser) or the official Google Gmail app on your mobile devices. Since this security information will not be available in 3rd party email clients (Mac Mail, Outlook, etc), we strongly recommend users access their email via Google's official site or tools.
