Auto-Open files in Firefox and Chrome

If you need to set a certain file type to automatically open after downloading in a web browser. Or if you need to edit what file types automatically open. 

Firefox

  1. Click on the 3 horizontal lines in the top right of your Firefox window
  2. Select options
  3. Under General, scroll down to the category Applications
  4. Find the file type you want to change the action on, then select the action from a drop down menu on the right
    • Note: if you cannot find the file type you are looking for, try downloading that file type first and then check this setting again

Chrome

  1. Download a file in Chrome
  2. At the bottom of the page where it shows what file had been downloaded, click on the arrow next to the file
  3. Select Always open files of this type

Follow these steps if you need to reset the settings you made

  1. Click on the 3 dots in the top right of your Chrome window and select Settings
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on Advanced
  3. Find the Downloads section
  4. Click Clear next to Open certain file types automatically after downloading
  5. This will clear all previous settings and will download files the default action.
