Q: Is a Safe Link always safe to click?
A: Safe Links provide an extra layer of protection by warning against unsafe links. However, it is still possible for a malicious web address to slip through if it has not yet been identified as unsafe.
Q: Can I have the old view of links shown rather than the long "safelinks" one?
A: Once the Safe Links service is implemented, all links embedded in the body of any email sent by senders from outside Dartmouth's Office 365 environment will be rewritten as a "safelink."
Q: Why do some URLs appear as "safelinks" and others don't?
A: Links embedded in emails sent from Dartmouth.edu accounts to other Dartmouth.edu accounts are not analyzed by the Safe Link service. Depending on the type of link embedded in an email message from a sender outside of Dartmouth, the appearance of the link may vary.
Q: What happens if a link is deemed malicious and I am not able to click through?
A: The embedded link will be rewritten to have the path https://...safelinks.protection.outlook.com.../ and the website contained within the link would be unable to be accessed.
Q: What happens if I copy the safelinks URL and paste it into a browser?
A: The Safe Links service will determine whether the link is safe and will either block the content or allow the website to be displayed.
Q: If I forward an email with an embedded safelinks URL to another email provider, will the recipient be able to click on the link?
A: The recipient will be able to click the link if the link references a safe site or content.
Q: What happens if I forward my email to another email provider (Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc.)?
A: Safe Attachments file blocking will apply to all emails even if it is automatically forwarded to an external service. However, Safe Links will not be applied to emails that are automatically forwarded to an external email provider to optimize delivery and prevent modification of embedded URLs.
