Create a Microsoft Team

Step-by-Step

Microsoft Teams is a chat-based workspace that brings together conversations, content, and a set of tools for teams to collaborate.

We recommend users download and use the Teams client rather than using O365.dartmouth.edu as being available for chat requires that you always be logged into Teams via o365.dartmouth.edu if you don't have the client. The client is available for download from https://teams.microsoft.com/downloads.

To create a Teams:

  1. Open the Microsoft Teams application.
  2. You will be prompted to login. Enter your full Dartmouth email address, then press the Tab key. You will be redirected to login via Dartmouth's web authentication page using your NetID and password.
  3. On the left-hand side of the window, click the Teams icon.
  4. At the bottom of the Teams list, click Add Team.
  5. In the following window, click the Create team button.
  6. Click the tile that represents the type of team you are creating. Anyone would be the default choice. The other choices will give your team a OneNote notebook that is customized to that type of team.
  7. To create your team, in the Team Name field, enter your team's name. In the Description field enter a description for the function of the team so that others looking at a list of team can understand the functionality of the team you're creating.
  8. In the Privacy field, choose whether your team is going to be private or public.
    • A Private teams requires an invite from one of the team owners.
    • A Public team can be joined by anyone in your organization (i.e. Dartmouth).
  9. Click Next and start adding members to the team by typing their name into the field that appears under Members.
    • Anyone in the Dartmouth Name Directory can be added to a team.
    • As you type in a name, listings from the Dartmouth name directory will appear for you to make a selection.
  10. Make a name selection, then click the Add button. The new member appears in a list under the entry field.
    • You can change a Team member's status (as a "Member" or "Owner") by clicking the down-arrow next to "Member".
    • You can remove a member by clicking on the 'X' that appears to the right of their name.
  11. Click Close when you're through adding members.
  12. After your team has been created, if you need to go back and edit the members of your Team, in the main Teams window, click the ellipses icon (...) to the right of your team name, and select View team.

NOTE: For all help within the Microsoft Teams application, you can use "T-Bot." T-Bot is accessible by clicking the "Chat" icon in the menu at the left-hand side of the Microsoft Teams window. T-Bot is at the top of the list of people available for a chat. Click T-Bot and then type a question in the edit box at the bottom of the large right-hand window pane.
