Obtaining Email Headers

Step-by-Step

When reporting spam or phishing attempts, we need the Internet Header of the message. The easiest way to submit this information to ITC is by forwarding the message as an enclosure.

For users whose mailbox is in the O365 (Outlook) environment, from BWA:

  1. Log into bwa.dartmouth.edu.
  2. If you are responding to an email from Dartmouth Services for this incident, open this email from your In Box. If you are creating a new email to report this, click +new mail.
  3. Click the open separate window icon, open separate window icon, located at the top right corner of the new message window. This will open this message in its own window.
  4. Next, organize your browser windows so that you can view both the list of emails in your inbox and the Reply or the New Message window.
  5. Click and drag the email from your inbox list to the reply or new message you are composing. Notice the email shows as an attachment in the new message window.
  6. Next, open the Scam or Phishing email message in your inbox from your web browser (bwa.dartmouth.edu).
  7. Click the arrow beside "Reply all" and in the drop down menu, close to the bottom, you should see "view message details". Click that. You should see a whole lot of text.
  8. Copy all of the text and paste it as a reply below the email attachment you created in in Step 5.
