On June 25, 2025 at approximately 3:00pm EDT, the following email was sent to members of the Dartmouth community.
Subject: Claim Your Inheritance
Sender: Claim <relations@icscards-nl.info>
Dear Sir/Madam,
My name is Edward Hayes, a solicitor.
Be informed that you have an inheritance sum of $16.3Million USD from your Great Aunt.
I sent several letters to your Mail Address but I received no response so I decided to contact you through email.
Kindly respond to claim it now.
Regards,
Edward Hayes Solicitor.
This email contains the following indications of a phishing attack:
- The sender email address has an unfamiliar domain (@icscards-nl.info)
- All the recipients were BCC'd, a common pattern when attackers send similar attacks to many recipients.
- The email offers something that is too good to be true (a $16.3 million inheritance)
- The email claims to have reached out multiple times and is demanding a response.
If you receive an email similar to this one, it is recommended that you take the following actions:
- Do not reply to the message
- Mark the message as spam or junk
- Forward the message to phishing@dartmouth.edu
- Block the sender
