Phishing Scam 2024.10.11 - Email Accusing Recipient of Making Inappropriate 9/11 Jokes

Date and Time First Identified

  • October 11, 2024 at approximately 3pm

Phishing Method

  • Social engineering email sent from made up address that appears to be legitimate (community.standards@dartmouth.edu) and claims to be from the Dartmouth Office of Community Standards.
  • The email accuses the recipient of making inappropriate jokes related to 9/11 in multiple settings.
  • The sender asks the recipient to provide available times to discuss their future with the college.

User Response

  • Mark the message as spam (which reports the spam/scam to Gmail)
  • Block the sender (so you don’t get another message like this) 
  • Do not reply to the message. 
  • Forward the message to phishing@dartmouth.edu
  • Share what happened with officers/classmates so they know how easy it is to be scammed if you’re not paying attention.

Subject: Inappropriate Jokes | Violation of Community Standards

We had a complaint lodged about certain insensitive jokes you have made about the 9/11 tragedy in both private and public settings. This includes but is not limited to social settings, classrooms, and campus messaging platforms (such as GroupMe).

We need to schedule a time to meet to discuss this and your future at this college. Please reply with your availability for next Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
