Phising Scam 2024.09.21 - Fake Emails Sent to Dartmouth Class of 1981

Date and Time First Identified

  • September 21, 2024 at approximately 5pm

Phishing Method

  • Social engineering email sent to numerous members of the Dartmouth Class of 1981.
  • The email referenced the class treasurer and seemed to know details of actual financial transactions.
  • The sender's name showed up as "Lynn Hamel Gaudet" but with the email address andreaburgess18@virginmedia.com

User Response

  • Mark the message as spam (which reports the spam/scam to Gmail),
  • Block the sender (so you don’t get another message like this) 
  • Do not reply to the message, 
  • Forward the message to phishing@dartmouth.edu as well as the domain owner to report the scam (in this case that would be phishing@virginmedia.com), and
  • Share what happened with officers/classmates so they know how easy it is to be scammed if you’re not paying attention.

Sample Unformatted Email

Subject: Administration & Program Management

Can you take care of an operating expense for us? (Name redacted), is unable to complete it right away, please let me know if you can pay for it using Zelle, Wire Transfer, Cash App, or PayPal I will then send you the vendor's payment information for the method of payment that suits you the best, and I will process your refund as soon as the treasurer is available. Kindly acknowledge receiving this email and let me know if you can handle this.
