WiFi Calling

Wi-Fi Calling is a service for Android and iOS smartphones providing the ability to make and receive phone calls over a wireless network connection, rather than the cell network. It's simple to use with no separate application or log-in required. Wi-Fi calling is a free service when calling to a US, US Virgin Islands, or Puerto Rico number. International rates still apply for international numbers.

What phones support Wi-Fi Calling?

  • Android Phones: Wi-Fi Calling is supported on most recent Android phones. To check if your phone supports Wi-Fi Calling, go to Settings to look for the Wi-Fi Calling option.
  • iOS Phones: Wi-Fi Calling via HD Voice is available on iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus and newer models.

How do I setup Wi-Fi calling?

First, check your Cellular carrier’s Web site for specific instructions. Below are general instructions for setting up Wi-Fi calling with iPhones.

Second, make sure your cell phone is setup to use the Eduroam wireless network. See https://services.dartmouth.edu/TDClient/KB/ArticleDet?ID=64684.

Third, activate HD Voice (also called Advanced Calling on some devices) on your Wi-Fi Calling-capable smartphone first and set up an address for use in the event of an emergency. You must have access to the Internet (Wi-Fi or cell network) to successfully register. Follow the steps below to learn more:

  1. Verify that you meet all of the eligibility requirements for Verizon phones or AT&T phones.
  2. Follow these steps to activate HD Voice. (Skip this step if it is already activated on your phone).
    1. Go to the Home Screen.
    2. Open your Apps menu.
    3. Tap Settings.
    4. Tap Cellular
    5. Stroke the slide button to the right for WiFi Calling.
    6. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  3. Once HD Voice has been enabled, follow these steps to activate Wi-Fi Calling.
    1. Go to the Home Screen.
    2. Open your Apps menu.
    3. Tap Settings.
    4. Tap Advanced Calling.
    5. Tap Activate Wi-Fi Calling.
    6. Follow on-screen instructions to enter a U.S. address for use in the event of an emergency call (911).

Once the address is saved successfully, the Wi-Fi Calling setting will be turned on. You are now able to take and make calls over Wi-Fi networks.
