Glossary of Terms
Active Directory: Microsoft’s directory product that contains the user account names and passwords that are used to access Microsoft-based systems like the Windows network, Exchange, Office 365 or Microsoft Online Services (MOS).
Blitz Web Access (BWA): The way in which current Dartmouth students, faculty and staff can connect to their email and calendar account using a web browser
Cloud Computing: Internet-based computing, whereby shared resources [servers, storage space], software [Exchange, OneDrive, SharePoint, etc.], and information [email messages, calendar events, shared documents] are provided to computers and other devices on demand.
Collaboration: Calendaring, document sharing, team/project workspaces, web/video conferencing, and other group-based activities. [Exchange, OneDrive, SharePoint, Skype for Business, Zoom, etc.],
Communication: Email, contact, instant messaging or video conferencing activities.
Domain: A set of accounts with like characteristics, such as organizational affiliation (e.g. Dartmouth, Tuck, Geisel, or Thayer), technology (Microsoft Online Services, Exchange), etc.
EULA (End User License Agreement): A EULA is a legal contract between a software application author or publisher and the user of that application. The EULA, often referred to as the "software license," is similar to a rental agreement. The user agrees to pay for the privilege of using the software, and promises the software author or publisher to comply with all restrictions stated in the EULA. The user is asked to indicate they "accept" the terms of the EULA by opening the shrink wrap on the application package, breaking the seal on the CD case, sending a card back to the software publisher, installing the application, executing a downloadable file, or by simply using the application.
Exchange: A Microsoft server application that supports email, calendaring, contacts and tasks functionality on desktops, phones, or the Internet through Outlook and other tools.
Microsoft Online Services (MOS) (aka Office 365): A suite of Internet-based products that provide email, calendaring, document sharing, web/video conferencing, and other tools.
NetID: Network Identification. This is a unique identifier for everyone at Dartmouth. It is comprised of 7 letters and numbers. When prompted for your user name or user ID, enter your NetID.
Office 365: The name of a Microsoft online productivity suite composed of email, calendar, and collaboration tools. Office 365 is included within the Blitz System.
Outlook: A Microsoft application that provides one of the ways in which people can connect to their Dartmouth email and calendar (Exchange) account; available as a web or desktop computer client.
SSID: SSID stands for "service set identifier" and is the unique name given to each wireless network. Many wireless networks will broadcast their SSIDs so that users can see the names on their computers and determine which one to connect to.
