Configuring Apple Mail

Step-by-Step

Note: Versions of Apple Mail, Contacts, Calendar running on Mac OS X 10.11 and earlier are not fully compatible with Exchange. We recommend only using Apple Mail, Calendar and Contacts with OS X 10.12.6 or later.

From the Apple menu, select System Preferences, then open the Internet Accounts pane. Click the plus symbol (+) in the lower left of the window to begin adding an account for Mail.

Using the Account Create Wizard

  1. In the Internet Accounts pane of System Preferences, if prompted, select Exchange.
  2. Enter your Name, e.g. John D. Doe.
  3. Enter your Dartmouth Email Address, e.g. John.D.Doe@dartmouth.edu (faculty and staff) or John.D.Doe.15@dartmouth.edu (students).
  4. Enter your email Password.
  5. Click Sign In.
  6. For OS X 10.10 and 10.11- you may see an error message appears, click Continue
    • Enter a Description (i.e. Dartmouth).
    • Clear the User name field, then enter your NetID followed by "@dartmouth.edu", e.g. d12345w@dartmouth.edu.
    •  Enter the server address outlook.office365.com.
    • Click Continue.
    • An Account Summary window will open with the message "Internet Accounts found a server account for the email address you provided. The following account will be set up on your computer."
    • Click Continue.
    • Check Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Notes and Reminders if you want to use those Apple apps with your Dartmouth credentials.
    • Click Done.
  7. For OS X 10.12 - you will see an error message
    • Fill in the User name field, enter your NetID followed by "@dartmouth.edu", e.g. d12345w@dartmouth.edu.
    • The Password field should still have your entry, if not, type in your password.
    • Click Sign In.
    • You will be prompted to "select the apps you want to use with this account". Check Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Notes and Reminders if you want to use those Apple apps with your Dartmouth credentials.
    • Click Done.

From the Dock or Applications folder, double-click Mail. It will take a few moments for email messages to begin populating the Inbox; be patient. To show the sidebar, click Mailboxes, and you will see the Inbox, Drafts, Sent, Trash folders, and any user created mail folders.
