Request a Mailing List

There are three types of group mailing lists that are available:
List purpose and use must be in support of the mission of the college

Office 365 Distribution List

An Office 365 Distribution List provides an easy way to send email messages to a group of people within the Dartmouth Community. Here are some things to know about an Office 365 Distribution List:

  • The use of a specific group list can be restricted to specific people, people only on the list or all of the Dartmouth Community.
  • An Office 365 Distribution List will have an address of @cloud.dartmouth.edu.
  • There needs to be 2 "owners" of an Office 365 Distribution List who will maintain the list membership and options.

Listserv List

A Listserv list provides a way to send email messages to a group of people within and outside of the Dartmouth Community. The messages can be a one-way communication in the form of an announcement list, or a back and forth communication in the form of a discussion list. Here are some things to know about a Listserv List:

  • A Listserv list is used when the number of subscribers is potentially large (over 1,000) or widely distributed geographically,
  • Every Listserv list, hosted at Dartmouth, must have an owner with a valid Dartmouth account.
  • A Listserv list will have an address of @listserv.dartmouth.edu
  • A Listserv list is used when the subscribers of the list contains non-Dartmouth.edu addresses.
  • A ListServ list can be managed with a web based interface or by sending commands to the list via email.
  • Postings to a Listserv list can be collected and saved in an archive.

Support is available to:

  • Create and delete lists
  • Update list owner if needed (self-serve for current owner)

List Owners responsibilities:

  • Add/Remove subscribers - as applicable
  • Moderate list - as applicable
  • Answer subscriber questions
  • Manage list configuration and settings
  • Share self-serve information for subscriber mail delivery issues
  • Inform ITC when list is no longer needed
  • Respond to ITC outreach regarding list status and use

Office 365 Group

An Office 365 Group provides a self-service alternative to an Office 365 Distribution List or a Listserv list. Here are some things to know about O365 groups:

  • You can find and create groups in the Outlook section of your Dartmouth email account at BWA.dartmouth.edu. If you create a group, you will be the owner of the group and can control it's membership.
  • An O365 group will have an address of @groups.dartmouth.edu.
  • O365 groups include an email conversation, which works like a group mailing list, shared file storage, and shared notebook.
  • See: Create a Group in Office 365 for more information
