How-To Change Your Display Name on a Mac

The name displayed when you log into your Mac (also known as display name or full name) may be updated if incorrect. 

Warning

This process involves accessing the Advanced Options of your user account. DO NOT make any changes unless specified in the step-by-step instructions below. Changing other settings might damage your user account and prevent you logging in. 

Step-by-Step

  1. From the Apple menu, select System Preferences
  2. In "System Preferences", select Users & Groups
  3. If the padlock icon in the bottom left corner of the preferences window is locked, click it and enter your Mac user name and password then click Unlock
  4. Hold down the "control" key on the keyboard and click your account name on the left side, then click Advanced Options...
  5. In the Advanced Options window, next to "Full name:", enter your name as you wish it to appear when logging into your account. Click OK
  6. Restart your computer to complete the name update
