Unable to delete files from Mac laptop

Issue

User is unable to delete a file or folder from their Macintosh computer.

Environment

This article applies to Macintosh users trying to delete files or folders.

Cause

The item is 'Locked' in the "Get Info" status window. The "Locked" state prevents the file or folder from being deleted.

Resolution

Using the "Get Info" command in the File menu when the item is selected, the "Locked" status box can be 'unchecked' to change that characteristic.

When unable to delete a file or a folder on a Mac, do the following:

  1. Right-click the folder or file (or click while holding down the "Ctrl" key if you're not using a mouse with right-click functionality) and select the "Get Info" option from the context menu.
  2. Click the box next to the "Locked" option to remove the check mark from the box and unlock the folder or file.
  3. Click the X at the top left corner of the window to close the Get Info window and save the changes. The file should now be unlocked.
  4. Drag the file or folder to the Trash and empty the trash.
