WiFi Calling

Wi-Fi Calling lets you make and receive phone calls on your mobile device using a Wi-Fi connection instead of a cellular network. This can be especially helpful in areas with weak cell coverage. Wi-Fi Calling is supported by most cell phone providers without a separate app or login.  Wi-Fi Calling is also typically a free service, however you should check with your provider if you have questions about cost, minutes usage, or international calling rates.

  • Android Phones: Wi-Fi Calling is supported on most recent Android phones. To check if your phone supports Wi-Fi Calling, go to Settings to look for the Wi-Fi Calling option.
  • iOS Phones: Wi-Fi Calling via HD Voice is available on iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus and newer models.

Benefits of Wi-Fi Calling

Wi-Fi Calling offers several advantages:

  • Available when connected to any Dartmouth Wi-Fi network including eduroam, Dartmouth, and Dartmouth Public.
  • Better call quality and coverage in areas with poor cellular signal, such as basements, rural locations, or dense buildings.
  • No additional app or account required - it works through your phone's built-in dialer.
  • Calls to US, US Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico numbers are typically free when using Wi-Fi Calling.
  • Supports 911 emergency calling when a cellular signal is unavailable (registration of an address is required).  Always be sure to state your exact location and emergency clearly to the 911 operator.

Who Can Use Wi-Fi Calling?

Wi-Fi Calling is available on most modern Android and iOS smartphones. Availability depends on your device model and your cellular carrier's plan. To check whether your device supports Wi-Fi Calling:

  • Android: Open the Settings app and search for "Wi-Fi Calling" to see if the option is available on your device.
  • iOS: Open the Settings app, tap "Phone", and look for a "Wi-Fi Calling" option.

If you do not see the option, your carrier may not support it on your current plan or device. Contact your carrier to confirm eligibility or for assistance in enabling the feature on your device.

How to Turn On Wi-Fi Calling

The exact steps to enable Wi-Fi Calling vary by device and carrier. In general, you can find the setting by following these steps:

  1. Open the Settings app on your smartphone.
  2. Look for a section labeled "Phone", "SIMs", "Calls", or "Connections" (this varies by device).
  3. Find the "Wi-Fi Calling" toggle and turn it on.
  4. If prompted, enter or confirm a US address for emergency (911) services.
  5. Follow any additional on-screen instructions to complete setup.

Note: If Wi-Fi Calling does not appear in your Settings, or if you need carrier-specific instructions, please contact your cellular carrier directly for guidance.
