Hardware and Account Recommendations When Traveling Abroad

Overview

When traveling internationally, especially to countries with known cyber threats, it is essential to ensure that your devices are secure, and your data is protected. The IT department can provide guidance on hardening device defenses, offer loaner equipment, and outline protocols for lost or stolen devices. Please also consult your department travel policies, and the Travel Registry | Global Dartmouth for additional information and help.

Getting Started

There are a few areas to consider when using technology abroad. Some of the practices below tend to error to the side of caution, but when going to a more restrictive area they can be necessary. The steps below will help keep you and your data safe, but please feel free to contact Technical Support for more information.

Computer

  • It is not recommended to take your primary device.
    • Secondary computers that can be wiped after returning are ideal.
    • Loaners can also be rented from the computer store, but they may have limited supplies.
  • Confirm any restrictions that the country may have regarding technology.
    • Example, China does not allow VPN use.
  • Create new local profile on the computer that has limited data.
  • Depending on the destination, you may want to avoid logging into primary account.
    •  Some networks should be thought of as open and viewable
    • Data can be transferred from primary device to loaner by downloading the information on the primary then transferring via USB or other external storage media to temporary device.
    • Temporary accounts can be created for use for travel. See Account Section below.
  • Avoid plugging into USB ports, even if just for charging
    • It is recommended to use an AC outlet and using a travel adapter

Cell Phones

  • To avoid loss of device and data, or due to privacy concerns, it may be best not to take your primary cell phone.
  • An older phone can be used as a temporary device.
    • Or an unlocked cell phone can be purchased from a retailer.
      • Unlocked phone means that it is not tied to a specific carrier, which would carry a contract
  • If your department has a Dartmouth plan, then the phone can be temporarily added to that plan with an international package add-on.
    • The international package add-on can be added then removed based on the trip duration.
  • Temporary accounts can be used to activate and set up the phone. See Account Section below for more information.
