The New Duo Universal Prompt- February 2024

The Change

On Feb 8th, 2024 between 6 pm and 10 pm EST, Duo will be rolling out an updated design for its two-factor authentication prompt. A new feature, known as the "universal prompt," will be taking the place of the current version. This upgrade is designed to offer a more secure, streamlined, and accessible method for verifying user sign-ins.

Behaviors 

Default behavior for all user account types (Student, Staff, Faculty, Guest, etc.) - For all account types, Duo adheres to a consistent default behavior. When a user engages in the Duo authentication process, the system will automatically present the most secure option or the method used in their last successful login from the available Duo options. Should the user wish to use a different method, they can opt for "Other Options," which will display all the available choices, as depicted in the screenshot provided below.

Exception: for Service, Departmental, & Organizational accounts with shared usage - Users of service, departmental, and organizational accounts that involve shared access will have a unique experience during the Duo authentication process. For these specific account types, as users navigate through the Duo flow to log in via Dartmouth WebAuth, they will be presented with a list of available options to choose from, as illustrated in the screenshot below. If your account falls into one of these three categories and you wish to activate this feature, please contact the service desk for assistance.
