Only NetID appears as name during Zoom call

Details

During a Zoom session, your participant name only shows as your NetID instead of your full name (and/or pronouns).

Problem

Typically, if you see just your NetID displaying and not your name it means that you clicked on a Zoom link that was sent to your Dartmouth account but you entered the Zoom meeting without actually being logged into your Dartmouth Zoom account. This can happen when a meeting host does not require authentication or does not require participants to be a member of the Dartmouth organization. Zoom will just connect you without any authentication at all using the only information it knows about your semi-anonymous participation in the meeting (your NetID).

Solution

To resolve the issue:

  1. Leave the meeting.
  2. Quit and Relaunch Zoom
  3. Sign back in via SSO (single sign on, with Duo for two-factor authentication)
  4. Confirm that you are logged in with your Dartmouth account. On the Zoom dashboard, if you click your avatar image in the upper right, it will show your name, email and a rainbow-hued "Licensed" text.

  5. Rejoin the meeting and your name should appear correctly.

Additional Follow-Up

Use the following to confirm your Zoom profile information is correct.

  1. Open a new internet browser window and go to https://dartmouth.zoom.us
  2. Click on Sign In and go through Duo to complete the login.
  3. Click on Profile in the left column (if not already highlighted).
  4. Click Edit off to the right side of the screen.
  5. Confirm your Display Name and Pronouns and whether you want to share your pronouns.
  6. Then click Save.

If all of that is good then whenever you launch a Zoom meeting while logged into your Dartmouth Zoom account it will correctly display your preferred name and pronouns.
