CrashPlan runs automatically and silently in the background, continuously protecting the data created and stored on desktops and laptops. CrashPlan is developed and hosted by Code42.
CrashPlan must be installed on desktop and laptop devices. Once installed, CrashPlan will run as a background service, and users can log into CrashPlan with their Dartmouth NetID and password for self-service file restores if necessary.
CrashPlan includes:
- Unlimited data backup, free of charge to user.
- Continuous data backup operating silently and invisibly, does not interfere with computer operations.
- Users can choose which files and folders are backed up.
- Users can restore files using CrashPlan software.
- It is secure. Data is encrypted end to end during transfer to the cloud and while at rest on the cloud server.
- CrashPlan can be installed on up to four Dartmouth-owned computers.

- All tenure and tenure-track Arts & Sciences faculty at Dartmouth, for use on their Dartmouth-owned computer, free of charge.
