Changes to Dartmouth Community Web Hosting

Dartmouth is moving non-institutional websites belonging to students, faculty, and staff currently hosted on www.dartmouth.edu to a new cloud-based web hosting service. This service will be available to current faculty, staff, and students.

What is changing

  • Sites for current students, faculty, and staff will no longer be hosted on the www.dartmouth.edu server. These sites will be migrated to other Dartmouth-hosted services.
  • A new hosting service is being offered on host.dartmouth.edu:
    • Current students, faculty and staff members will be able to obtain a website via a self-service portal.
    • Websites will have a unique domain name of the user’s choosing, i.e., jstudent.host.dartmouth.edu.
    • Site owners will be able to use a custom domain that they own for their site, i.e., jstudent.org. The site owner will be responsible for obtaining the alternative domain name.
    • The new web site accounts will have a full complement of web development tools available to choose from via a C-panel interface (similar to many commercial web hosting services)

How will this affect me

If you currently have a web site hosted on www.dartmouth.edu you will be contacted by ITC. You will have the following options:

  • Have your account at www.dartmouth.edu closed, you can choose to either:
    • Have your data deleted
    • Obtain an archive of your data
  • Migrate your site to another Dartmouth-hosted  service
    • If you choose this option ITC will assist you in the migration process.
    • If your site uses PHP, you will need to ensure that it is compatible with PHP 7.2 before June 2020.
    • Websites that are migrated to the host.dartmouth.edu  service will have a new URL:  https://name_of_your_choice.host.dartmouth.edu
  • Migrate your site to another hosting service.
    • If you choose this option, you will be responsible for obtaining a new hosting service, domain name, etc.
    • ITC will provide you with an archive of your data for upload to your new site.
