ArcGIS Pro via Remote Desktop Services(RDS)

ESRI ArcGIS Pro via Remote Desktop Services (RDS)

ArcGIS Pro 3.0 as a virtualized app here: https://rds.dartmouth.edu/

  1. Contact us at research.computing@dartmouth.edu to have your NetID added to the RDS pool (RDS-RC-ArcGIS active directory group)
  2. Request a DartFS account for storage:  Navigate your browser to https://dashboard.dartmouth.edu/research/hpc_account to request a "DartFS" account.  This will be used to load and save files used with ArcGIS Pro.  You'll receive and email within a day or so with your new account information. A description of DartFS is located here: https://services.dartmouth.edu/TDClient/1806/Portal/KB/ArticleDet?ID=64630
  3. Connect to the Dartmouth College Virtual Private Network(VPN). If you have the VPN client, log in with your Dartmouth NetID and password.  If you don't have the Global Protect VPN client installed yet, follow the overview and installation instructions here:  https://services.dartmouth.edu/TDClient/1806/Portal/KB/ArticleDet?ID=66806
  4. Remote Desktop Tools:
    1. For Mac users, download and install the "Microsoft Remote Desktop" app from the app store. Publisher: Microsoft Corporation
    2. For Windows users, the software "Remote Desktop Connection" is likely installed already and no action is necessary in this step
  5. Navigate to https://rds.dartmouth.edu/ and sign in with your NetID and password
  6. Click the blue "ArcGIS Pro" icon  Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)
  7. A small file, 'cpub-ArcGISPro-Research-CmsRdsh.rdp' will be downloaded.  Double-click this file to run it (it will launch the remote desktop tools on its own).  You may have to enter your NetID and password again.  After a few moments you should see ArcGIS Pro launch as a remote session (it will look similar to an app running locally, but it is running on Dartmouth's servers and delivered through ethernet or wireless connection over the VPN)  Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)

  10. It is important to leave the "Microsoft Remote Desktop" (Mac) or "Remote Desktop Connection" (Windows) software running.
  11. From within ArcGIS Pro, you can load data, export data to your DartFS directory, for example, navigate to \\dartfs-hpc.dartmouth.edu\rc\home\<last digit of netid>\<netid> or 9\f002...
  12. To save a project or export a dataset to DartFS, use the base format \\dartfs-hpc.dartmouth.edu\rc\home\
  13. Although the app icon was blue in the RDS system, the App icon on a Mac in the applications tray is red and white

Note: when logging in, it is recommended to start with the browser open and pointed to https://rds.dartmouth.edu and to make sure to close out of any existing Remote Desktop / Microsoft Remote Desktop sessions.  The small 'cpub' file will re-launch Remote Desktop, so it is best to have it closed.
