Outlook (All platforms)

  • A paperclip means the message has an attachment.
  • A flag indicates you have flagged the message for follow up.
  • A check indicates you have flagged a message as complete.
  • An exclamation point indicates a message has been marked as high priority by the sender.
  • A down arrow indicates a message has been marked as low priority by the sender.

Outlook 2013, 2016 (Windows)

  • A blue vertical bar to the left of a message means that the message has not been read.
    • If the reading pane is off then an unread message will have bold blue message headings.
  • An opened (read) message will no longer have the blue bar or bold message headings.
  • An open envelope icon and a purple arrow pointing left means the message has been read and replied to.
  • An open envelope icon and a blue arrow pointing right means the message has been read and forwarded.

Outlook 2016 (Macintosh)

  • A blue dot to the left of a message and bold blue message headings mean that the message has not been read.
  • An opened (read) message will no longer have the blue dot or bold blue message headings.
  • An arrow pointing left means the message has been read and replied to.
  • An arrow pointing right means the message has been read and forwarded.
