Computer Security at Dartmouth

Computer Security at Dartmouth encompasses several topics. For tech introduction needs, this article will discuss: the DartAlert service, the LiveSafe app for your mobile device, the GlobalProtect VPN, and our AntiVirus software Crowdstrike. There will be other links below for more information. Information about the new Antivirus (CrowdStrike Falcon) being released for campus use will also be included as that service is deployed.

DartAlert

DartAlert is part of a campus-wide communications system that Dartmouth would utilize in the event of an emergency. AlertUs is the application that allows Dartmouth's authorized personnel to relay important emergency alert information to your computer screen. Additionally, you can also sign up for emergency messages to be sent to your mobile phone.

LiveSafe app

LiveSafe is an app for your phone that provides a quick and convenient way for you to watch out for your friends, or to quickly report a safety concern to Safety and Security. The app provides access to campus resource information, easy Emergency 911 and Dartmouth Safety and Security communications, anonymous tip reporting, and more.

How to install LiveSafe

GlobalProtect VPN

The GlobalProtect VPN (Virtual Private Network) is used to connect your computer to the Dartmouth network when you are working remotely.  Once the VPN is activated, traffic between your computer and Dartmouth's network is encrypted, and you will have access to services just as if you were on the campus network. It is not advised to leave this connection on all the time as it may impact your Internet speeds.

CrowdStrike

CrowdStrike is software that provides advanced antivirus and malware protection. It protects users against cyberattacks, monitors computers and systems for malicious behavior, and sends alerts to Dartmouth's security professionals to stop threats in real time. It runs as a background service once it is installed and you should see little to no notices from the application. It does not scan like traditional antivirus/malware protection and will be less likely to slow down your computer because of that.
