About eduroam

eduroam (education roaming) is a secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community AND is the recommended network for Dartmouth faculty, staff, students and sponsored accounts. It is an authenticated and encrypted network that allows you to access Dartmouth resources. It also allows access to high-speed secure wireless connections at other eduroam educational institutions world-wide with your Dartmouth credentials.

A connection to eduroam is required for certain tasks like printing to a network printer or GreenPrint, or connecting to a shared file server. If you are out of range of the eduroam network and need to connect to one of these services, you can also use the VPN. You can find more information on that here.

You can learn more about eduroam and where it can be used around the world at eduroam.org. Access to eduroam when off-campus does not provide direct access to Dartmouth resources. You will still need a VPN connection for full Dartmouth access when not using eduroam at Dartmouth.

Setup

eduroam should be setup using the eduroam installer. This installs the eduroam SSID on the device in a way that masks your username and protects your privacy.  It removes Dartmouth Public from the device so that roaming issues are minimized. Using the installer ensures the proper RADIUS certificates are installed and trusted by the device so service is not interrupted during annual certificate renewals. The installer also helps prevent rogue networks from impersonating eduroam and performing Man-in-the-Middle style attacks.

Getting Help

If you are having problems with the eduroam wireless network on your device, please refer to the FAQ knowledge base article. If your issue cannot be resolved via the FAQ article, please contact the ITC Service Desk or your department's IT support office by submitting a ticket or by calling 603-646-2999 at any time.

eduroam Visitor Access

Visitor access to eduroam enables higher education and research institute visitors (also using eduroam) to access the secure and trusted eduroam Wi-Fi network.

Dartmouth visitors with eduroam access from another institution are connected to the same underlying network that is Dartmouth Public wireless. They have the benefit of a network connection but not the ability to access Dartmouth resources.
