Incoming Students Financial Aid for Computer Purchase

Financial aid is available to eligible students in the form of a loan to cover the cost of one of the basic computer packages. (More information on this option will be available in June.) If you were awarded need-based financial aid and you request a loan to cover the cost of one of the basic laptop computer packages or up to the cost of the basic package toward the purchase of one of the high-end laptop computer packages, your award will be revised in late summer or early fall, following verification of your purchase from The Computer Store.

If you choose to have your computer shipped to you during the summer, you will be required to pay in advance by credit card, but you can receive the loan as a credit to your student account in the fall.

If you pick up your computer when you arrive on campus, the purchase will be charged to your student account and can be offset by the loan amount.

If you choose to defer your purchase of a personal computer until you arrive on campus, or if you elect to buy directly from elsewhere, you will still be eligible to receive financial aid. You will receive a letter from the Financial Aid Office in mid-June with details and limitations.

If you are ineligible for financial aid, financing arrangements are sometimes available through the manufacturers. There are also educational loans through private lenders that families can apply for. You should contact the Financial Aid Office for more information about these loans.

Keep in Mind...

  • Dartmouth has an Apple, HP, Dell, and Lenovo authorized repair facility on campus.
  • Maintenance (warranty) arrangements differ for different makes and models of equipment.
  • Once the product is out of warranty, you will not be able to purchase extended warranty coverage.
  • You are encouraged to insure your computer against other risks (such as theft) through a homeowner's policy or through another commercially available plan.

  • Students can have their computers shipped home or pick up them up on campus after they complete their first-year trips or during their athletic sessions.

  • You can order a computer online from at any point after you receive your Dartmouth NetID and password.
  • The Computer Store is located in the basement of McNutt Hall if you want to stop by and view the models on display before placing your order.
