Summary
3rd-Party VPN (Virtual Private Network) services, including Apple's iCloud Private Relay and VPN by Google, route your devices' network traffic through servers managed by the VPN provider and their partners. While this can improve privacy on public networks, it can impact your ability to use Dartmouth's services. 3rd-Party VPNs also interfere with Dartmouth's network security monitoring, including anti-malware scanning of network traffic.
Additionally, Dartmouth ITC does not have any way of monitoring, supporting, or otherwise ensuring the performance of traffic being routed thru 3rd-Party VPN services. Network Services staff have observed that devices using these services experience greatly reduced Internet speeds and frequent interruptions in network traffic. These interruptions appear as if the campus network is experiencing an outage, even when it is working properly. Disabling the 3rd-Party VPN on the affected devices has been shown to immediately resolve these issues.
VPNs can enhance privacy and security when using public Wi-Fi networks, such as those at restaurants, retail stores, hotels, and airports. Dartmouth ITC offers the Global Protect VPN to all Dartmouth students, staff, and faculty at no cost and recommends that you use it whenever using public or otherwise untrusted networks.
