When do I need to use the VPN client?

Below is a list of commonly used technologies and applications, together with whether they require VPN use to access while not on the Dartmouth campus. You can help make sure that the existing VPN solution has enough capacity by only using it when you need to.

Requires VPN

  • DartFS-Networked Attached Storage used in labs, HPC and web applications
  • Discovery (HPC)
  • MyFiles/OurFiles (File sharing)
  • OnBase
  • RDP/SSH to on-campus machines

Does not require VPN

  • Banner/DartHub
  • Canvas (Learning Management)
  • dartDM - Dartmouth Directory Manager (Password resets, identity management)
  • Dartmouth Services Portal
  • Dropbox (File sharing)
  • Employee Self-Service (iExpense, FlexOnline, etc)
  • Google (Drive, Docs, Sheets, etc)
  • IRA
  • Microsoft Office 365 (BWA, Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc)
  • OneDrive (File sharing)
  • Oracle E-Business Suite
  • Slack
  • Zoom (Phone/video/voice conferencing)
