Student response systems let instructors pose questions during a lecture and collect answers from the whole class in real time. Common uses:
- Polling student opinions and prompting discussion of the reasoning behind them
- Checking comprehension mid-lecture so points of confusion can be addressed immediately
- Running quick quizzes or knowledge checks with instant, visible results
Students respond on their own devices — phones, tablets, or laptops. Response summaries are displayed live to instructors and students, and answers are saved for later review.
Dartmouth's supported tool
Dartmouth's supported student response system is Poll Everywhere. Most Dartmouth affiliates (A&S, Tuck, Thayer) log in with NetID and Duo via Dartmouth SSO rather than a separate Poll Everywhere password. Geisel School of Medicine faculty and staff are on a separate Geisel-managed license and continue to log in with their existing Poll Everywhere credentials.
Using it with Canvas
Poll Everywhere doesn't require a Canvas connection to work, but you can optionally connect it via LTI to sync your roster and pass poll results to the gradebook — see Using Poll Everywhere with Canvas.
