Online multiplayer gaming on consoles such as Nintendo Switch, Playstation, and XBox performs best when connected to a wired Ethernet network connection.
Wired network service is available in most locations on campus. For information about locating and connecting to the wired network in your dorm room, please see the Dorm Room Network Connections KB Article.
Some games on some consoles may additionally report errors about NAT Types and/or fail to properly function when hosting or joining multiplayer games. In-game voice communications may also experience connection failures. Dartmouth ITC is able to offer Gaming IP Addresses to on-campus resident students for devices that experience these issues. These addresses are configured on the network to resolve most of these issues. To request a Gaming IP Address, please complete the Static IP Request Form and choose Gaming as the address type.
Gaming IP Addresses only work with wired network connections in the building to which they are assigned. If you move to another building, you will need to request an updated address. Gaming IP Addresses are not available for Wi-Fi connections.
