About Zoom

Zoom brings video conferencing, online meetings and group messaging into one easy-to-use application.

Classroom Technology Services created a document that goes into detail on how to download and log into Zoom, use all the features of Zoom, and some best practices. We encourage you to download this document for reference while you are still learning to use the software.

Setup

A Zoom Pro license is available to all Dartmouth Faculty, Staff and Students. To activate your Dartmouth Zoom account:

Go to dartmouth.zoom.us and click Sign In to provision your Dartmouth Zoom account.  Enter your Dartmouth NetID, password, and Duo Authenticate. Once this step is completed your account is activated. Bookmark this webpage. This is where you can sign in to your account and modify meeting settings.

To Install Zoom

  1. Go to dartmouth.zoom.us
  2. Click on Download Desktop Client at the bottom of the webpage
  3. Open the Zoom installer and click continue until the installation completes.
  4. Open Zoom Application
  5. Select Sign in with SSO (Located on the right side of the window)
  6. Enter dartmouth when you are prompted to fill in the domain
  7. You should see a standard NetID sign in page. Enter your NetID, Password, and Duo authenticate.

Best Practices

  • Only sign in with your Dartmouth Zoom account, do not use a personal Zoom account for Dartmouth meetings
  • Use the Zoom client to host and join meetings whenever possible
  • Configure Zoom to disable video sharing by default to prevent inadvertent sharing of video
  • Software Updates
    • Zoom provides a pop-up notification when there is a new mandatory or optional update within 24 hours of logging in.
    • You can check for updates on the Zoom desktop client by clicking your profile picture then click Check for Updates.  If there is a newer version, Zoom will download and install it.  For more information, see Where Do I Download The Latest Version?

Recordings in Panopto

All Zoom recordings are automatically transferred to Panopto for permanent storage. Recordings in Zoom will be automatically deleted after 100 days, but will remain in Panopto. If you create a recording through Zoom and would like to share it out, we recommend sharing the recording from Panopto.

You can access Panopto at dartmouth.hosted.panopto.com. Here you can see your recordings and any content shared with you. Recordings for a specific class may also be available through a link in your Canvas course, if your professor makes it available.
