Keeping your Macbook Up-to-Date

Macbooks should be kept up-to-date to improve security, correct bugs, install new features, keep up with possible application compatibility, and increase performance. Systems that no longer meet the system requirements can cause security vulnerabilities, create operation inefficiencies, become a source of compatibility issues, be targeted for attacks, and cause financial consequences. This article walks you through how to ensure your Macbook is up-to-date.

Identifying if Your MacBook and Operating System is No Longer Supported

We want to make sure everyone knows how to update their Operating System if it is no longer supported. 

Check your current OS

  1. Click the Apple menu in the top-left of your screen
  2. Select About this Mac
  3. The macOS will display with the current version
  4. Please compare to Apple's article regarding current versions at Find out which macOS your Mac is using - Apple Support
  5. It should always be within 3 major versions of the latest
    • For example, if the Apple Page shows shows the newest version at 15.x, then the macOS in the About this Mac window should display at least 13.x
    • If you find that your version is more than 3 versions behind but there is no update button available, please contact technical support.

Before You Update Your Mac OS

  • If an update is needed, please check on compatibility for any specialized software or peripherals you may use. 
  • Please also read over Things to Do Before Upgrading article before updating. If you have any questions, please contact technical support. 
  • If the newest update just released, you may want to allow a few weeks before updating to the newest version
    • Some vendors will update their software after the release
    • Gives Apple to fix any bugs in the newest release

Please follow Apple's Keep Your Mac Up to Date article for steps specific to your OS version. Use the Select version drop down to choose the version that you found in the Check Your Current OS section above. 

If you find that your version is more than 3 versions behind but there is no update button available, please contact technical support.
