Safari asks for TouchID or the local computer password when using autofill

Issue

When using the browser Safari, you are prompted to enter the local computer password or TouchID whenever you use autofilled passwords. It has not done this in the past.

Environment

This article applies to Mac OS Mojave 10.14 and Safari

Cause

A recent update may have changed a setting in TouchID preferences that requires TouchID or a password whenever Safari autofills a password.

Resolution

1. Click on the Apple logo in the upper right corner.
2. Click System Preferences and then TouchID.
3. Uncheck the box next to Safari Autofill.
