Microsoft Word no longer opens on Mac

Issue

Microsoft Word O365 will no longer open any document or even open the application

Environment

This article applies to O365 on a Mac

Cause

Word is trying to update the links automatically while opening

 

Resolution

  1. turn off your wifi
  2. open word
  3. click Word tab
  4. open "preferences"
  5. open 'general'
  6. deselect 'update automatic links at opening'
  7. close word
  8. turn on your wifi
  9. open word
