Roku Set up for Xfinity

Tags welcome

Initial Setup

  1. Connect an Ethernet cable to a wall jack and then to the Roku. (Alternatively, you may use the wireless network ‘Dartmouth Public’. A wired connection is strongly recommended as streaming TV is sensitive to the latencies introduced by wireless networks, particularly in areas with many wireless users).
  2. Connect the HDMI cable to the TV and the Roku.
  3. Turn the TV on and connect the power to the Roku.
  4. Put the batteries in the remote and pair it with the Roku by pressing the button near the battery compartment. Put the battery cover on the remote.
  5. Choose English as the language for the device.
  6. Select the appropriate network connect for your set up below, and follow those steps.
Wireless Connections
  1. If you are using wireless, select Wireless and the option to Set up new wireless connection.
  2. Scroll down to Dartmouth Public and press OK. You can skip the next section and move to Complete Roku / TV Setup.
Wired Connections
  1. If you have an Ethernet cable for a wired network connection, select Wired (Ethernet)
  2. Choose I am at a hotel or college dorm.
  3. On your computer, connect to the network that the Roku is broadcasting from. To do this on a Mac, from the Apple Menu click System Preferences, then Network Settings. Connect to the wireless network displayed on the TV screen. Keep trying to connect to the network until you are prompted for a passcode. It will likely fail many times before it succeeds. Enter the passcode as directed.
  4. Next, open a web browser and bring up any web page. If necessary, choose to continue even though the connection is not secure. Register the device with a name and complete the Dartmouth authentication using your NetID and password. Within the next minute the Roku device will complete registration on the Dartmouth network and will start to update the software on the device. Once done, it will reboot and enter some setup configuration.

Complete Roku / TV setup

  1. Select OK to download the updated Roku software. Let the device update and reboot.

  4. Point the remote at the TV and follow the prompts to pair the Roku remote with the TV. The TV should start playing music, and then will stop playing music as the Roku remote is set to match the TV.

If you are setting up a device for a shared space, before you proceed with the next step, make sure that you have a unique service account you can use to set up the Roku device.
