Installing GreenPrint on Linux

Step-by-Step

  1. Open a browser and navigate to http://localhost:631. If you receive a 404 error, CUPS is not correctly installed.
  2. Click administration and add printer. For the port type select LPD/LPR. (These menus will vary in different versions of CUPS, but in principle are the same).
  3. In the connection URI field enter lpd://ipsum.dartmouth.edu
  4. The Name, Description and Location fields can be set to help you identify the printer and be set according to your preference. It is recommended that you set the Name field to GreenPrint. Click continue.
  5. On the next screen select the best available driver. What is listed will vary greatly depending on your software repositories. 'Generic PostScript Printer' printer works fine and is always available in CUPS, but does not provide color, ideally any 'Ricoh Aficio MP C#####' should provide the full set of options.
  6. This should complete the installation. Unlike Windows or OSX you will not be prompted when submitting jobs, but as long as your username matches you should have the jobs available to release at the station.

  1. Your Linux username must match your NetID.
    • Your Linux password does not have to be the same as your Dartmouth password
  2. Linux packages – these 3 packages are required:
    • cupsys
    • cupsys-client
    • cupsys-bsd

These are present by default in many common Linux distributions and may not need to be installed.
