Fetch SFTP Software for Macintosh

Step-by-Step

Fetch is an SFTP application that is site-licensed for Dartmouth. Originally developed at Dartmouth, this product is now sold by FetchSoftworks.

To use the Dartmouth site licensed version of Fetch:

1. Download Fetch.
2. Unzip the downloaded file (default on the MacIntosh is to unzip in the same folder as the zip file was downloaded to).
3. Drag Fetch into your Applications folder.
4. Open a new Finder window, press Command-Shift-G on your keyboard, and in the box type ~/Library/Preferences followed by Return.
5. In the folder that contained Fetch, there is an additional plist file. Copy this file into the ~/Library/Preferences folder.
6. Open Fetch from your Applications folder to verify that it was installed correctly.
   1. NOTE: with macOS Ventura, Control-click 'Fetch' in your Applications folder and select 'Open'. You will see a warning about macOS not being able to 'verify the developer of "Fetch". ...   Go ahead and click the "Open" command.  You may be prompted to install Fetch 5.8.3 (or newer as new versions are released).  Click the 'Install and Relaunch' button to open the new version.

You can also download the latest version of Fetch by visiting Fetchworks and applying for an academic copy:

1. Apply for a free Fetch license.
2. You will receive an email with instructions from Fetchworks with a serial number.
3. Go to the Fetch homepage and click Download.
4. Double click the Fetch.dmg file you downloaded.
5. Drag Fetch into your Applications folder.
6. Launch Fetch, and when prompted, click Enter Serial Number.
   Note: If you accidentally closed the prompt, you can also find Enter Serial Number... under the Fetch menu next to Apple logo in top left corner of your screen.
7. Enter the information sent in the email from Fetchsoftworks, and you should be able to start using Fetch!

For more information on using Fetch, see Using Fetch (SFTP) to update a website.  Beware that Fetch supports multiple file transfer protocols.  SFTP is encrypted and is the only one supported on Dartmouth servers.  FTP is an older, non-encrypted protocol.
