Snapshots and backups serve different purposes within the OurFiles system:
- Snapshots are taken at regular intervals to provide self-service recovery options for end-users. They are ideal for scenarios such as accidental deletion, overwriting, or retrieving previous versions of files.
- Backups are conducted nightly for the purpose of entire system recovery in case of catastrophic failure or disasters. They are not intended for regular, individual file recovery needs.
Snapshot Schedule:
- Daily Snapshot: Captures every changed file once every 24 hours. Files kept for more than 24 hours are accessible for restore for up to 7 days.
- Weekly Snapshot: Captures every changed file once a week. Files kept for more than one week are accessible for restore for up to 5 weeks.
- Monthly Snapshot: Captures every changed file once each month. Files kept for more than one month are accessible for restore for up to 3 months.
Backup Schedule:
- Nightly Backup: A comprehensive backup of the entire OurFiles system is taken every night and retained for 60 days. This method is used for disaster recovery and is not intended for regular file recovery requests.
If you need assistance, submit a support request at services.dartmouth.edu with the name of the file you want restored and the OurFiles location where it appeared.
Important: Files can only be restored if they have made it to a snapshot. For example, a file that has resided on OurFiles for less than 2 hours cannot be restored.
