Step-by-Step

This application uses a network license manager and requires a connection to the Dartmouth network each time you run IDL.

Version 8.5 is only compatible with MacOS 11 and older.

(This installer includes ENVI, which most users need not select for installation.

  1. If you do not already have XQuartz, download and install that first.  This provides some display libraries needed by IDL
  2. Download IDL 8.5 for Macintosh, as well as the license file. (You made need to right-click the license file link to download it)
  3. Double click Install_IDL85ENVI53SP1.pkg to start the installation process.
  4. Click Continue, accept the EULA and click Continue.
  5. Click Install for all users of this computer, click Continue, and click Continue again.
  6. After installation is complete, copy the downloaded license-client.lic file to Applications/exelis/license.
  7. Double click IDL85 in the exelis folder, and you should be able to use IDL.
  8. You may be prompted to install Java6 for OSX.  If so, follow the prompts.
