Body
Your Dartmouth email address is also your Claude username. If you change your email in myaccount.dartmouth.edu or through any other process, the next time you log into Claude you will land in a brand new account instead of your existing one.
Why This Happens
Claude uses your primary Dartmouth email address to identify your account. When that email changes, Claude treats you as a new user and creates a new account tied to the updated address. Your original account and everything in it stay separate and are not automatically carried over.
Before You Change Your Email
If you know an email change is coming, save anything you want to keep from Claude first.
- Log into your current Claude account.
- Copy and paste any conversations you want to keep into a Word document or Notepad file.
- Note any settings, preferences, or custom instructions you have set up so you can recreate them later.
- Save any other content from Claude you want to hold onto, such as projects or saved files.
- Once everything is saved, go ahead and change your email address.
If You Already Changed Your Email
If your email has already changed and you still need to recover information from your original Claude account, the Help Desk can assist.
- Submit a ticket to the Help Desk requesting a temporary email revert for Claude access.
- The Help Desk can temporarily revert your email so you can log back into your original Claude account.
- Copy and paste the conversations, settings, or other items you need into a Word document or Notepad file. Claude does not currently support import or export in our environment, so copy and paste is the only way to move this content.
- Once you have everything saved, log into your new Claude account and paste the content in.
