Duo Mobile - Unsupported OS Device and What to Do

Body

As of February 2, 2026, Duo Mobile requires version 4.103 or newer, which is compatible only with iOS 16+ and Android 11+. Starting in March, unsupported devices will no longer work. If your device cannot be updated to a supported operating system, this article outlines alternative authentication methods to maintain access to Dartmouth systems.

Who Is Affected

Users with devices running operating systems older than iOS 16 or Android 11 will not be able to install or update to the required version of Duo Mobile. If you have a supported mobile OS but an out-of-date Duo Mobile app, please visit your Apple App or Google Play store today.

Check Your Device's OS Version

Before exploring alternatives, verify whether your device can be updated to a supported operating system.

Check iOS Version

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap About.
  4. Look for Software Version — if it shows iOS 15 or earlier, your device may not support iOS 16.
  5. To check for updates, go to Settings > General > Software Update.

Check Android Version

  1. Open the Settings app on your Android device.
  2. Scroll down and tap About phone (or About device) then Software Information.
  3. Look for Android version — if it shows Android 10 or earlier, your device may not support Android 11.
  4. To check for updates, go to Settings > System > System update (path may vary by manufacturer).

Alternative Authentication Options

If your device cannot be updated to a supported OS, you have several options to continue authenticating with Duo:

Option 1: Update Your Device's Operating System

  • If your device supports a newer OS but hasn't been updated, install the latest available update
  • After updating, download or update Duo Mobile from the App Store or Google Play Store

Option 2: Enroll a New Device

  • If you have access to a newer smartphone or tablet that supports iOS 16+ or Android 11+, you can enroll it as a new Duo device
  • See the Add a Duo Device article in Related Articles for enrollment instructions

Option 3: Use Phone Call Authentication

  • Duo can call your phone and prompt you to press a key to authenticate
  • This works with any phone (including landlines) and does not require an app
  • You can add a phone number for callback in your Duo device settings

Option 4: Use a Platform Authenticator

  • Some systems support platform authenticators such as Windows Hello, Touch ID, or Face ID on your computer
  • This option depends on the application you're accessing and your device capabilities

Option 5: Use a YubiKey or Other Security Key

  • Hardware security keys like YubiKey work across operating systems and do not require a mobile app
  • Security keys can be used as a primary or backup authentication method
  • See the Duo - Configure Security Key article in Related Articles

Option 6: Use a Duo Hardware Token

  • ITC provides hardware tokens that generate passcodes for Duo authentication
  • Initial tokens are provided at no cost; replacement tokens cost $20
  • Tokens can be obtained at The Dartmouth Computer Store (7 South St.) or by contacting them at (603) 646-3249 or The.Computer.Store@Dartmouth.edu
  • See the Duo Token Distribution Policy article in Related Articles
