Installing Microsoft Security Essentials on Windows 7 computer.


  1. Uninstall any third-party anti-virus programs currently on computer (e.g. Symantec).
  2. Identify computer as 32-bit or 64-bit version.
    1. Start button > right-click Computer > Properties.
    2. Check version under System heading.
  3. Download Microsoft Security Essentials from Microsoft Site -
    1. 64-bit OS - ENUS\amd64\MSEInstall.exe.
    2. 32-bit OS - ENUS\x86x\MSInstall.exe.
  4. Once download completes, double-click file to run installer.
    1. Select Yes to “allow the following program to make changes to this computer.”
    2. Select Next.
    3. Accept Software License Terms.
    4. Check box for If no firewall is turned on, turn on Windows Firewall.
    5. Select Next.
    6. Confirm that you don’t have any other anti-virus programs installed.
    7. Select Install.
    8. Install Wizard completes, check Scan my computer for potential threats after getting latest updates.
    9. Select Finish and allow Microsoft Security Essentials to perform initial scan.
