Alumni NetID FAQ

What is a NetID?

Like a user name, a NetID is a permanent, personal identifier that is unique to each individual and is used to log in to most Dartmouth systems, including some used by alumni. All current faculty, staff, alumni and students of Dartmouth have a Dartmouth Account with a corresponding NetID.

Will I need to log on with my NetID every time?

Yes. Each time you access a secure system you will need to log on using your NetID and password. Once you log on to one system or application, your credentials will seamlessly move through different applications without requiring you to log in again as long as you continue to use the same browser session.

What type of password do I need for my NetID?

Passwords must be between 8 and 32 characters in length with one special character in any position other than the last two. Examples of strong passwords: tuck!188, DMS_1997, DART**04. Dartmouth also requires users to set four security questions for added protection.

What if I don’t know my password or security questions?

Passwords and security questions are not stored and cannot be sent to alumni. If you previously set your password and know the answers to your security questions, you can use the online self-service password reset process. If you do not know your password or your security questions, or never set them, you must call the Alumni Help Desk. If you have never activated your account, you must first do so by contacting the Alumni Help Desk. After activation, you can use the self-service options to lookup your NetID and reset your password.

Is there a way to check if I know my password and security questions?

Yes. Alumni can check their access by following these instructions:

  1. Go to
  2. Enter your NetID.
  3. Enter your password.
  4. Click Enter to be presented with your security questions.
  5. If you do not recognize the security questions or are unsure of the answers, please do not guess. Exit your browser and call the Alumni Help Desk.

What if I have an assistant I want to serve as my proxy for Dartmouth’s online services?

The Dartmouth Alumni Help Desk provides alumni with an authorization form that you and your proxy can sign. The authorization form will allow the proxy to use the login credentials on your behalf to access all systems to which you have access. Proxy access cannot be provided for individual applications.
