Returning to Campus: Phones

As departments are beginning to return to campus, we have a few reminders about the phone system:

  1. If you’ve been using a software-based phone (GoToConnect) on your computer or cell phone while working remotely, that software will also work when on campus. Some people have been contacting us about needing a desk phone because they are returning to campus. GoToConnect works while sitting at your desk on campus just like it did at your home. And, unlike physical desk phones, GoToConnect allows you to:
    • Easily call people using their name rather than their having to know their phone number;
    • Block numbers from calling your number (via the cell phone app);
    • Send and receive text messages to/from your Dartmouth number.
  2. If you have a Poly phone on your desk and decide that you’re just going to use GoToConnect for your Dartmouth phone, let us know and we’ll come pick up the desk phone – giving you back valuable desk space! Submit the request at Service - Report a Problem or Request... (dartmouth.edu)
  3. If you have an old Cisco phone(s) that you need to get rid of, please let us know that as well. Collect any old Cisco phones you still have around your office, then let us know and we'll come get them and have them recycled. Submit the request at Service - Report a Problem or Request... (dartmouth.edu). Alternatively, you can drop old Cisco phones at The Computer Store located in the lower level of McNutt Hall.
  4. If you want to use GoToConnect on your cell phone, be sure to enable WiFi calling on your cell phone. This allows you to use GoToConnect on your cell phone without using minutes or data on your cell plan – as long as your cell phone is connected to a wireless network.
  5. Some offices are rearranging their space as they are returning to campus, with people moving desks or offices. If you have a desk phone, and you are moving, please take your desk phone with you to your new space. It should work in any active network jack that you plug it into in your new location. Please let us know your new location.
  6. If you need a network jack activated for your new phone location (or your computer), please complete the "Request Service" form found at Service - Wired Network (dartmouth.edu).
  7. If you're rearranging and have a hardware fax, did you know the phone system allows you to send and receive faxes from any machine on which you send/receive your Dartmouth.edu email? You can use this as an opportunity to get rid of your office's fax machine and save more space! See Can I set up my phone to receive faxes rather than having a designated fax line? and Can I set up my phone to send faxes rather than having a designated fax line?

There are many more features that are available to improve your communications. If you'd like to learn more, let us know by completing the "Request Service" form found at Service - Request or Update Phone or ... (dartmouth.edu)
