About Duo
Duo is a security tool that provides Two-Factor Authentication, or "2FA" to add a second layer of security when using your Dartmouth NetID and password to sign in to certain services. Duo uses two-factors - something you know (your password), and something you have (your phone) to verify your identity.
Verifying your identity using a second factor (like your phone or other mobile device) prevents anyone but you from logging in, even if they know your password. Once you've enrolled in Duo you're ready to go: You'll log in as usual with your Dartmouth NetID and password, and then use your device to verify that it's you.
There are 3 primary ways to authenticate with Duo:
Duo allows you to register as many devices as you would like. These are the most commonly used:
- Duo mobile application - Duo Push
- Call Me - Phone call back to your mobile, desk, or landline phone
- Apple Touch ID *currently only compatible with Google Chrome
- Passcode - Duo Tokens (which can be obtained at the Computer Store, first one is free, $20 for replacements)
No longer available due to security changes:
- SMS (text) passcodes
- Passcodes (via the Duo Mobile) app
Setup
To access a service that requires two-factor authentication using Duo, first you need to self-enroll in Duo.
It is recommended that you register more than one device with your Duo account (example: Mobile phone, Landline, DUO Token, Office phone). See the following sections for Managing Your Devices and Add a Duo Device to your Duo account.
